Tai Hung Rice Shop

Adapted from Su Tong’s novel Rice, the movie tells the story of Wulong, an escaped peasant who works in the city in the 1920s as a clerk in a rice store in Dahong, and is oppressed by his boss and his eldest daughter, Qiyun, and Sixth Master’s henchman, Ahbao. Hateful Wulong gradually turns into a cruel and heartless man.

He first denounces the adulterous affair between his youngest daughter, Wei-Yun, and Sixth Master’s henchman, Ah-Bao, which leads to Ah-Bao’s murder; then he has sex with Wei-Yun and marries her; then he rapes his eldest daughter, Qi-Yun, and leads to the death of the boss; he fills the emptiness and uneasiness in his heart with hatred and vengeance, and is eventually killed by an assassin hired by his eldest daughter.

Plot-wise, the seduction of the youngest daughter, Yi-Yun, by her country fellow, Wu-Long, and Master Six’s henchman, Ah-Bao, doesn’t quite make sense.
