In 1923, during a heavy snowfall in Odate City, Akita Prefecture, Japan, a litter of purebred Akita dogs was born to the Kondo family and given to Mase, the head of the Prefectural Civil Engineering Department.
The latter passes one of the dogs on to Hidetsujiro Ueno (Tatsuya Nakadai), a professor at Tokyo Imperial University, to train.
Ueno’s only daughter, Chizuko, is overjoyed, while the Ueno couple looks puzzled.
Later, Chizuko (Mako Ishino) falls in love and becomes pregnant with her boyfriend’s child.
The boyfriend makes a special trip to visit.
