wedding banquet

The movie tells the story of a gay man who pretends to marry a woman in order to cope with his parents’ urging to get married, but it leads to a series of mishaps and conflicts.

Gao Weitong, a Taiwanese gay man living in the United States, has been living with his American boyfriend Simon for years. In order to reassure his parents, he marries an illegal immigrant female painter from Shanghai, Weiwei, so that she can obtain a green card as a quid pro quo.

However, this plan begins to change when his parents go to the United States to organize a wedding for him. After the wedding banquet, a drunken Weitong and Weiwei have sex under false pretenses and make her pregnant, so Simon and Weitong get into an argument, and Weiwei finally decides to keep the child and raise it with Weitong and Simon, while the two old men board a plane to leave the U.S. with conflicting feelings.

The plot of this drama is really a happy ending. Originally a farce that was falling apart, it is not easy to make everyone happy in the end.

喜宴

Weitong (Winston Chao), a successful gay man, is living happily with his boyfriend Simon (Mitchell Lichtenstein) in the U.S., but his troubles come from the fact that he has to deal with his father (Lang Xiong) and mother (Guei Yalei) in Taipei, who are trying to force him to get married again and again.

When Wai Tung is forced to write a letter claiming that he will get married in the U.S., his parents want to witness it.

He has no choice but to get married to Weiwei (Jin Su Mei), a disillusioned artist from Shanghai, under false pretenses in order to get away with it.

His parents are very happy with Weiwei, but they are not happy with Wei Tong’s hasty attitude. In order to satisfy his parents and return to Taipei as soon as possible, Wei Tong tries his best to make his parents happy.

However, his parents’ return to Taipei is delayed time and time again due to the constant twists and turns, which causes his relationship with Simon to turn red, and Weiwei is unexpectedly pregnant with his child.

It seems that Wei Tong has no choice but to be a “superficially normal” man in front of his powerful parents (tradition).
