Based on the play of the same name by Alfred Urie, the movie tells a story of friendship across race and class.
The story takes place in the American South from 1948 to 1973, and tells of the relationship between Daisy, an old Jewish woman, and her black chauffeur, Hawk. Daisy is very unfriendly and stubborn, while Hawk is gentle and patient; at first, Daisy is full of prejudice and mistrust of Hawk, but as time passes, the two men gradually build up a deep friendship.
At the end of the movie, Hawk visits Daisy in a nursing home on Thanksgiving Day, and the two of them still maintain a deep friendship.

Plot Synopsis:
Daisy (Jessica Tandy JessicaTandy) grew up in a poor neighborhood as a child, and it took the rise of her husband’s business to bring their family into prosperity, so Daisy is very frugal.
Now that she’s too old to drive herself, her son hires a black chauffeur, Hawk (Morgan Freeman), for her, but Winn-Dixie hates it.
She initially avoids the trip because she doesn’t want Hawk to be the driver, but then she realizes that it seems so uneconomical for her son to pay her and not have to work for him that she finally gives Hawk his first chance to drive for herself.
Hawk is a very kind and simple man who knows he is not accepted and does not take his unhappiness to heart.
On the contrary, he cares about Winn-Dixie’s life, and slowly learns about Winn-Dixie’s persistent character of sticking to her principles.
Winn-Dixie’s rejection of Hawk slowly began to melt away, until over the years she finally realized that Hawk was a very trustworthy friend.
As a result, Winn-Dixie teaches the illiterate Hawk how to read and write, and Hawk becomes Winn-Dixie’s closest friend in her later years.
