Based on the novel of the same name by British author Ian McEwan, the movie tells a story of love, lies and redemption that begins in the English countryside in 1935 and continues through World War II in France and London.
In 1930s England, an upper-class family has a pair of sisters who have grown up with Robbie, the family servant. The younger sister overhears her sister and Robbie making love, which becomes an indelible shadow in her mind. Her jealousy of her sister and her feelings for Robbie intertwine to send her into a whirlwind of emotions, and she wrongly accuses Robbie, which leads to his capture and imprisonment, and ultimately to his being forced into the army to join the Second World War.
