The story takes place at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Civil War.

On his way home by train, Ruan Ting Shen (Tse Yin), whose father started out as a greenhorn, meets Zhuang Meng Die (Liza Wang), a prominent young woman whose ancestor was an official in the former Qing Dynasty.

The two of them fall in love at first sight.

However, although Ruan and Zhuang live next door to each other, they are at loggerheads due to their different identities.

Mengdie’s brother, Zhuang Youwei, has arranged a marriage for his sister out of his own interest.

Learning the details, Mengdie finds Ting Shen, and with the help of the Ruan brothers, she and Ting Shen both run away to Beiping.

The elopement of the two young men and women intensifies the conflict between the Ruan and Zhuang families, while on the other hand, Tianya (Lui Leung Wai), who is deeply in love with Mengdie, is also obsessed with her.
