Plot Synopsis:
Set in 1963, during the Cold War, mute girl Eliza (Sally Hawkins) works in a government laboratory as a cleaning lady there.
As a young girl, a serious illness takes away Eliza’s voice, and she lives a solitary life in silence to this day, with only the old painter (Richard Jenkins) and her coworker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) as her only friends.
One day, a high-alert siren goes off in the lab and a mysterious tank filled with water is brought in, and Eliza is shocked to discover that the tank holds a grotesque half-human, half-fish creature.
Led by Richard (Michael Shannon), a team of scientists want to refine substances in the creature that could create a biological weapon, but to Elisa, it’s nothing more than a lonely life form like herself.
As time passes, feelings actually develop between Elsa and the monster.
