The movie tells the complex and deep emotional entanglements between mother Aurora and daughter Emma. Aurora is a strong single mother, who was widowed at an early age, and raised her daughter on her own, and has a strong desire to control and protect her daughter, and her daughter, Emma, although gentle on the surface, is stubborn, and she has a reliance on her mother, but is not obedient to her mother, and so there are often quarrels between mother and daughter, especially in the issue of marriage. Especially when it comes to marriage, she insists on marrying a poor schoolteacher instead of listening to her mother. Afterwards, her marriage doesn’t go well, and she is tortured by her husband’s infidelity and her own illness, and eventually she dies of cancer.

Plot Synopsis:
Daughter Emma (Debra Winger) is the darling of her mother, Aurora (Shirley MacLaine), who has arranged everything for her since she was a little girl, including her mannerisms, grooming, schooling, playtime, and friendships, all of which must be approved by Aurora.
After her husband’s untimely death, Aurora took charge of everything in the house and became even more “authoritarian” towards Emma.
Although Emma appears to be gentle and weak, she is very stubborn inside.
This led to many fights between the two mothers and daughters.
Aurora never accepts another man’s advances, and Emma grows up with her mother in her arms.
After growing up, Emma began to try very hard to get rid of her mother’s “authoritarianism”: she defied her mother’s objections and married a graduate student with an unstable job …… She spent thirty years to get rid of her mother’s “authoritarianism”, but in the end, it was not the case that she was able to get rid of her mother’s “authoritarianism”.
