The movie tells the story of a couple suffering from miscarriages, so they decide to adopt a 9-year-old girl, Esther, from an orphanage. However, on the surface, she is an innocent girl, but in fact, she is hiding a shocking secret behind her.
The plot of the movie is full of twists and turns, extremely subtle, at the beginning, the audience may think that the plot is very irrational, a 9-year-old girl can not have such a high IQ, fooled a few adults, but the development of the story cleverly answered the viewer this doubt, especially in the end of the truth is revealed, but also a slap in the face.
However, child welfare groups have expressed strong displeasure with the negative impact the movie has had on adoption, decrying it as contributing to negative stereotypes of orphans.
After the release of the trailer for the movie, Warner Bros. received so many complaints from parents and guardians of adopted children that they were pressured to remove the line, which reads, “It’s just not possible to love an adopted child the way you love your own biological child.”
