The movie tells the story of an affair between Hisagi, a 55-year-old publishing editor, and Rinko, a 38-year-old calligraphy teacher.
Hisagi has no career aspirations and has nothing to do at work, while Rinko’s husband is mute and cold to his wife. When Rinko meets Hisagi, who is in a mid-life crisis, the two fall in love, indulging in intense emotions and physical sex, and are overwhelmed by physical pleasures they have never experienced before.
After the affair is exposed, both their careers and families encounter unprecedented crises, and ultimately, they choose to end the relationship by martyrdom.

Plot Summary:
Shoichiro Hisagi (Hiroshi Yakusho) is a senior editor at a publishing house, his wife Fumie Hisagi (Chiko Hoshino) does design pottery, and his adult daughter works at a hospital and rarely comes home.
Shoichiro feels that family life is boring and the couple is always polite.
Shoichiro has a lover, Rinko Matsubara (Hitomi Kuroki), an amateur calligraphy teacher.
Rinko is an elegant and intelligent woman.
Unfortunately, she is married to Haruhiko Matsubara, an uninterested doctor.
He is cold and leads to a void in their marriage.
At one point he firmly tells Rinko that he will never divorce her, that he has evidence of his wife’s cheating and exposes things.
On the other hand Fumie suffers in silence and eventually has to divorce.
With winter coming, how can Shoichiro and Rinko stay with each other forever?
